The Engineering Culture — Meritocracy, Technology, and the Functional Organization

Exxon Mobil is, at its core, an engineering company run by engineers. The CEO is an engineer. The leadership pipeline is dominated by engineers. The company employs over 2,200 PhD scientists, holds proprietary algorithms in seismic imaging that competitors can't match, and reorganized into a functional structure in 2019 to centralize engineering and project execution. This module gives candidates the honest cultural picture — the strengths (technical depth, meritocracy, learning) and the well-documented critiques (top-down management, fear-driven culture in some organizations).
